EZ-Backup - Backing up Databases

If you are backing up a database, there are special steps that need to be taken to ensure a "good" backup of an "open" database. While there are several ways to backup "open" databases, IBM/Tivoli offers an additional piece of software, the TSM for Database module, that allows the EZ-Backup software to talk to your database and back it up while the database is open.  There is an additional charge for the TSM for Database module.

Please note that a successful backup of you computer does not necessarily ensure a successful backup of your database. For more information, see The IBM Redbook on "Using ADSM to Backup Databases". Also, in most cases, if your computer is already using the EZ-Backup software (Tivoli Storage Manager), your may need an additional (separate) node name to back up the databases. (We suggest using a similar node name with the database also in the name.)

Documentation, including Connect Agents / Tivoli Data Protection Modules, as well as IBM Redbooks and FAQs are available for the following database applications:

Should you need this special software, email us at ezbackup@cornell.edu for assistance.

IBM/Tivoli does not make TSM for Database Modules for some other databases (MySQL, DB2, 4D, MeetingMaker, FileMaker, Microsoft Access, etc.). Some of these databases are often "simple" databases, meaning they are usually just one file per database. Others are more complex. If you are using these databases and need to back them up, special precautions should be taken. To back up these types of databases, it is important that the files aren't changing during backup. The best way to ensure that the database is not changing is to shut those databases down for backup. Email us at ezbackup@cornell.edu for assistance.
